Wear & Care

Wear: The CMCcare can be worn day and night as needed. The brace will not deteriorate in normal heat conditions and is stain and abrasion resistance. It can be worn under gloves and in water. Please note: the strap will get wet but will dry rapidly after towel drying to remove excess water.

How do I know if this is the right thumb splint for me?
While the CMCcare is designed to fit all thumbs, it does work best for those whose thumbs have a “swan-neck” deformity. The CMCcare helps hold the bottom of your thumb bone in its proper place so it does not slip on the small wrist bone underneath it. When the brace is properly fit, it keeps the bone of the thumb and the wrist or carpal bone it connects to from grinding on each other and causing pain when you grip or pinch.

Can I fit the brace by myself?
The CMCcare is easily fit to your hand and we have created step-by-step instructions to guide you through the simple two step process.

How to Wear this Brace: CMCcare Thumb Brace

What is the brace made of?
The CMCcare is molded out of a mixture of a plastic and a rubber-like material. The material is very durable, waterproof and both stain and abrasion resistant. You can use mild cleaners to remove dirt and you can machine wash it in a small mesh laundry bag.

I tried a similar brace but found that it was too hard on my thumb. Is the CMCcare soft or hard?
The CMCcare is a firm brace that provides the correct amount of support. It has some flexibility to allow you to shape it for a customized fit. Every CMCcare comes with a 3pp Cozy Liner to cushion the interior and edges of the brace. Packages of 5 Cozy Liners are available for purchase so you always have a clean Cozy Liner as needed. If your skin is thin or your thumb bones are enlarged from arthritis, you can also add a soft Gel Mate silicone gel pad to cushion and support your thumb. The Gel Mate® Silicone Gel Sheet is sold separately on this website. The gel sheet comes with instructions and a pre-sized pattern you can use to cut a pad out of the gel material. Gel Mate is self-adherent so it stays in place. It can be removed for washing and reapplied when it’s clean and dry.

Please note: The pattern is a general guideline and when printing the cut out instructions from your own computer, choosing the printing option "Actual Size" or "True to Size" will provide a more accurate pattern.

How long will the brace last?
How long the brace lasts will depend on what you do when you wear it. If you use it for light to moderate daily activities, you can expect the splint to last for several years. If you do heavy work while wearing it, the brace may eventually wear down in areas, although it is still likely to last a year or more.

Can I replace the straps if they wear out?
Yes, you can replace the straps. One extra strap comes with the brace and you can purchase additional sets of 3 straps. Watch the How to replace the strap of the CMCcare thumb brace video for step by step instructions on how to take the old strap out and put a new, clean strap into the brace.

Can I wear this in water?
Yes, the CMCcare can be worn in water. The body of the brace is fully waterproof but the straps may get damp when washing your hands and will saturate if immersed in water when swimming or washing dishes. Blotting the strap with a towel will help it dry quicker.

Can I cut the brace to make it fit better?
While the edges of the brace can be carefully trimmed with scissors, this is not the recommended fitting method. If you are being seen by a therapist or other health care provider trained in fitting braces, they can use a heating tool to curve edges away to relieve tight areas. How is the CMCcare different from other molded braces?
There are numerous thumb braces on the market including ones molded from the same type of material as the CMCcare. What makes the CMCcare different is how little of your thumb is covered by the splint and how effective it is at reducing thumb pain by holding your thumb at just the right spot.

The CMCcare is more expensive than some of the other splints I have looked at. Will my insurance pay for it?
The material and the molding process used in the CMCcare make it a better, longer lasting brace that will not fray, tear or stain or wear out easily. Think of this brace as a “permanent” brace you can wear whenever you need to protect your thumb and hopefully stop it from getting worse. Many insurance companies will reimburse for this brace, but you will need to submit the insurance claim once you have the brace. We will gladly supply you a code insurance companies use to determine if something will be paid for. Please know that not all insurance covers braces and that your co-pay may be close to the cost of the brace.

Finally, a brace that works!

I have tried several other braces with less than optimal results. This one is exactly what I needed - it offers great support for my CMCJ (reducing pain), is comfortable, and I can even get it wet!

Saved my guitar playing

Like in the other reviews, I tried other brands to help the arthritis I developed in my right thumb joint when I took up guitar in my 70's. None of them worked. I'm now able to play using the CMCcare Thumb Brace without further damage to the joint. I own 3. One near the guitar, one in the car for when I forget to bring one and one near my workout area when I lift weights. I first saw one being used by a guitar player at the Floyd Country Store during their Friday night jamboree. At first I didn't believe the name of the website, but here it is. They take great pains to make a solid brace as well as keeping available the parts that can wear out.

BEST thumb brace on the market

I tried several other brands of thumb braces trying to save some money, but they all had various issues (not enough support, made hand numb, didn't fit properly, limited range of motion, etc.). I finally splurged for this one, and for once the more expensive option was absolutely worth every penny. It fits perfectly, and there is no limit to my range of motion. It completely relieves my pain.

I have large hands for a woman, and the size large fits me perfectly.

There is another brand of thumb brace that is also expensive and looks very similar. I decided on this one because the straps can be replaced if they wear out, so the brace should be wearable for years. The other expensive brand has straps that can not be replaced, and reviewers said they tend to wear out fairly quickly. When that happens, the only option is to buy a new brace. So if you need a brace for the long term, this brand appears to be the better choice.

I LOVE IT

I'm not happy it was left in the mailbox to melt, but it turned out that it then molded to my hand so nicely. I'm putting off the cmc basal joint surgery, so till then, IT IS JUST PERFECT!! I love it.!! not as much protection as my thumb cast but certainly less bulky, easier to wear and being black, it doesn't show the dirt, so I can wear it to restaurant when necessary, and its not hot under it. . I'll be getting another for my left hand. BTW, it came way before expected, very nicely packaged with a little cloth pouch with a drawstring. so happy with it!

Thankful

This brace has helped my hand tremendously. I have arthritis in that joint and it is extremely painful. I've been getting it injected every three months on the dot. I used a different price in the past which did not help to reduce the pain. This brace worked so much better, and is very comfortable. I wear to do as much as I can. However, I am an infusion nurse, and cannot wear it at work.
