Wear & Care
Wear: Gel Mate sheets should be trimmed to a size slightly larger than your scar. A measurement grid on the back of the sheet makes it easy to cut the right size and can be used to measure the progress as your scar heals and gets smaller. It is recommended that you wear the silicone gel sheets a minimum of 12 hours a day and up to 22 hours depending on the location and age of your scar. Your skin should be clean and dry prior to applying your Gel Mate, to improve the adherence to your skin. If you are wearing Gel Mate over a joint, where movement may affect it sticking to your skin, using a soft wrap-around bandage or sleeve is recommended to help keep it in place.
Care: Daily washing with soap and water will prolong the life of your gel sheeting. Air dry on the plastic backing or a piece of plastic wrap to keep the gel sheet clean and free of debris. Your Gel Mate can last up to one month with proper care. Replace the sheeting when the gel is no longer sticky or if the gel starts to dry.
Please Note: Gel Mate is not a sterile bandage and is not recommended for use on open wounds. It is always recommended that you discuss any scar management product with your health care provider. Please stop using if you experience irritation or discomfort.

You can start using your Gel Mate once your wound is fully closed. Never use any scar product on an open wound.
Does this help the underlying scar?
The advantage of silicone gel sheeting is the gentle pressure it applies to not only your surface scar, but the scar tissue underneath. Gel Mates help to align collagen fibers to aid in healing wounds and prevent scars from limiting the motion of the ligaments and tendons under your skin. This is especially important for scars on your hand or foot where tendons and ligaments are quite superficial and scar tissue can limit your motion.
Can the Gel Mate be used for padding in a splint or brace? Yes, the Gel Mate® Silicone Gel Sheet can be cut and trimmed to be inserted into a thumb splint or brace to add extra comfort and padding. When purchasing the Gel Mate to use with the CMCcare Thumb Brace(sold separately) it will come with instructions and a pre-sized pattern you can use to cut a pad out of the gel material. It is easy to cut and place into the brace for improved comfort without making the brace bulky. Please note: The pattern is a general guideline and when printing the cut out instructions from your own computer, choosing the printing option "Actual Size" or "True to Size" will provide a more accurate pattern.

With proper care (daily washing with soap and water), Gel Mates will last for several weeks and possibly up to a month or more.
How do I clean my Gel Mate?
Wash the gel sheeting with soap and water and place it on the plastic backing or on a piece of plastic wrap to dry. Gel Mates dry quickly and can be placed back on your scar once thoroughly dry.
How long should I wear the gel sheet?
Recommendations vary but in general, research shows that wearing gel sheeting for a minimum of 12 hours and up to 22 hours a day is optimal for softening the scar and reducing redness and itching. It’s best to remove the sheeting at least once a day to wash and thoroughly dry the area.
I am using a lotion to massage the scar. Will the lotion affect the gel sheet?
Massage is an important part of scar care and lotion or oil can be used along with the gel sheeting. You need to wash and dry the area thoroughly before replacing the gel sheeting as it won't stick to skin that still has lotion or oil on the surface.
How long do I have to wear my Gel Mate before I see results?
Silicone gel sheeting can be effective at reducing redness and itching in as little as a day. Its effect on softening and flattening your scar depends on the age and depth of your scar. In general, it will take a week or two to begin to see your scar change and on mature scars, it may take 3 to 4 weeks.
Is there latex in the silicone gel sheets?
Silicone gel sheets are 100% latex-free. The 100% medical grade silicone is hypoallergenic, durable and washable.
